To understand the essence of Songbird, we must look at the moment when the Bee Gees found themselves at a crossroads. After some works that did not resonate as they expected, the album Main Course, released in 1975, marked a turning point. It was their first deep dive into R&B, soul, disco, and funk sounds, laying the groundwork for what would become their signature sound for the rest of the decade. This change not only revitalized their career but also transformed their public image, especially in the United States. Keyboardist Blue Weaver, who had previously played with Strawbs and toured with Mott the Hoople, joined the recording of Main Course. The album cover, with its new logo, was the work of American artist Drew Struzan.

The song Songbird, with a duration of 3:36, was produced by Arif Mardin. The Bee Gees, formed in 1958 by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, were born on the Isle of Man and spent their early years in Manchester, England, before moving to Australia in the late 50s. It was in Redcliffe, Queensland, where they began their musical journey, achieving an early success in Australia with Spicks and Specks. Their return to the UK in January 1967, under the promotion of Robert Stigwood, catapulted them to a global audience. The group distinguished itself by its three-part vocal harmonies, with Robin's distinctive vibrato in their early days and Barry's falsetto that would become their trademark later on. The Gibb brothers not only wrote their own hits but also created and produced for other artists.
