The story behind

Son and Daughter, according to DoReSol

The first time Brian May showcased his renowned guitar skill in a solo that would become a hallmark was for the song "Son and Daughter". Although the version featured on Queen's self-titled debut album does not include this solo, a rawer, less polished take recorded for the BBC does feature it at the end. This solo, which would later develop into its definitive form, would be heard extensively in Queen's concerts until 1975, occupying the center of "Son and Daughter" and allowing the rest of the band a breather or a costume change. The song, written in 1972, became the B-side of the single "Keep Yourself Alive" and remained part of the group's live repertoire well into 1975. Its sound, influenced by blues rock and heavy metal, clearly places it at the beginning of the band's sonic exploration.

Unlike other tracks from Queen's early period that resurfaced on their tours between 1984 and 1986, such as "Liar" or "The Seven Seas of Rhye", "Son and Daughter" ceased to be performed live once the major hits began to dominate their shows. The recording of this piece involved the participation of several sound engineers, including Roy Thomas Baker, David Hentschel, Ted Sharp, and Mike Stone, under the production of John Anthony, Roy Thomas Baker, and the band Queen themselves. The track, with a duration of 3:23, is a reflection of the group's more primitive sound, which formed in London in 1970 and comprised Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon.
