The story behind
The song Someone Like You by UB40, with a duration of 4:53, was conceived with the collaboration of Dan Armstrong, Danny Canaan, and the band itself as producers. The sound of this piece draws from the roots of reggae and dub, genres that defined this English group originally from Birmingham.
The story of UB40 begins in 1978, when its eight members, childhood friends from a working-class background and diverse ethnicities, decided to form a group. Curiously, they acquired their first instruments with money from compensation received after a pub incident, and some of them were still learning to play them. After recording a demo that caught the attention of a local radio station, they began performing in nightclubs. It was in 1979 that Chrissie Hynde, leader of The Pretenders, discovered them and gave them the opportunity to be her opening act on a tour. The following year, in 1980, they released their debut album, Signing off, and founded their record label, DEP International, under which they released Present Arms in Dub. Massive recognition came in 1983 with their rendition of Red Red Wine, a song originally by Neil Diamond, which was part of the cover album Labour of Love. By 2010, the original lineup was still active in international concerts, even though Ali Campbell, their vocalist, had left the group in 2008 to start a new musical project.
