The story behind
There is a song in El León that sounds like a sigh trapped in a Caribbean ska rhythm, and that contrast is what makes it unique. Soledad is not just a catchy melody, but a piece that breathes between the festive and the melancholic, with a pulse that drags you without warning. The bass and winds intertwine as if they were dancing a calypso in the middle of a Buenos Aires sunset, while the voice moves with the cadence that Los Fabulosos Cadillacs mastered: neither too fast nor too slow, just at the point where the music feels natural.
They recorded it in 1992, at a time when the band had already moved beyond garage rehearsals in Buenos Aires to set up in studios with borrowed equipment. The album El León ended up being a bridge between what they were and what they wanted to be: a collage of salsa, reggae and rock that didn’t fit into any label. Soledad was one of those tracks that, despite not being the first single, ended up standing out for how the band made the rhythm enhance the lyrics rather than drown them out. It lasted three minutes and two seconds, but within that time, there are more layers than it seems at first glance.
