The story behind
Skin, according to DoReSol
The song Skin, which is part of the album Ray of Light, is distinguished by its opening with processed vocals that intertwine with an electronic rhythmic base. Originally, during the early stages of the album's composition, this piece was known by the name Flirtation Dance, and its theme seems to revolve around physical attraction. The duration of this piece is 6 minutes and 22 seconds.
The album Ray of Light, released on February 22, 1998, marked a significant shift in Madonna's sound compared to her previous work, Bedtime Stories from 1994. This record delves into genres such as electronic, trip hop, techno-pop, and new age, also incorporating elements of ambient, house, rock, and classical music. The lyrics and music of the album reflect a deep exploration of spiritual themes, influenced by Madonna's interest in Kabbalah, her studies of Hinduism and Buddhism, and her daily practice of Ashtanga yoga. After the birth of her daughter Lourdes, Madonna began working on this project. She initially collaborated with producers Babyface and Patrick Leonard, but not finding the desired direction, she decided to explore a new musical path. For the production of Skin and other songs on the album, she collaborated with Marius de Vries and William Orbit, in addition to her own participation as producer.
