Following the success of her first work, the artist was determined to shape her next project. She sought out Nile Rodgers to handle the production, admiring his previous work on David Bowie's Let's Dance. In fact, she composed five of them herself, four in collaboration with her then-partner and colleague Stephen Bray, while the remaining ones were written by other composers. The recording sessions took place at the Power Station studio, located in New York City. For these sessions, Rodgers called upon former bandmates from his band Chic, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson.
