The story behind

Material Girl, according to DoReSol

When we think of Material Girl, it's easy to imagine Madonna on a dazzling stage, surrounded by luxury and with a defiant attitude. The song, released in 1985, quickly became an anthem that spoke of aspirations and a world where value was measured by the material. The lyrics present a protagonist who is only interested in men who can offer her a life of abundance, making it clear that money and possessions are the key to capturing her attention. It's a bold and provocative portrait of the era, inviting reflection on priorities and desires in society.

The recording of Material Girl took place in 1984 at the Power Station studios in New York. The production was handled by Nile Rodgers, who had already worked with Madonna on her previous album, Like a Virgin. He, along with his former Chic bandmates, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson, contributed a sound that combined elements of new wave, dance pop, and post-disco. The song was written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans. Despite not having written it herself, Madonna felt that the song's concept reflected her own situation and ambitions at the time, seeing it as a way to explore the security that material possessions provide, beyond emotions. The production was characterized by synthesizer arrangements and a robotic chorus repeating the key phrase: "living in a material world". The music video, directed by Mary Lambert, paid homage to the iconic "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" scene from Marilyn Monroe in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), adding a parallel plot about a director trying to win over an actress.
