The story behind
Say It Isn't So, according to DoReSol
The story behind Say It Isn’t So takes us to a crucial moment in Billie Holiday's life, although the song itself is not the main focus of the original material. What does emerge is the biographical film *Lady Sings the Blues*, released in 1972, which chronicles the life of the legendary singer. This production, directed by Sidney J. Furie and made by Motown Productions for Paramount Pictures, delves into the complexities of Holiday's life, from her humble beginnings cleaning a brothel in Harlem to becoming a jazz star. The plot also addresses her struggle with heroin addiction and the loss of loved ones, painting an intimate portrait of her challenges. Diana Ross's portrayal of Billie Holiday was so outstanding that it earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 1973. The film, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival that same year, is based on Holiday's life as published in 1956.
Billie Holiday herself, whose birth name was Eleanora Fagan Gough, was born in Philadelphia on April 7, 1915. Also known as Lady Day, her musical career began around 1930. Her father, Clarence Holiday, a jazz guitarist, abandoned her at a very young age, and her childhood was spent in Baltimore with her teenage parents. She had a difficult upbringing, marked by the absence of her parents and by painful experiences, such as being sent to a reform school at the age of ten after suffering sexual assault. By twelve, she was already working cleaning brothels, and at fourteen, in New York, she was forced into prostitution. Her entry into the music world was almost accidental. Looking for money to avoid eviction, she entered a bar in Harlem. After a failed attempt as a dancer, a pianist gave her the opportunity to sing, and that was the beginning of her career. Her musical training was self-taught, learning by listening to figures like Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. The duration of the song Say It Isn’t So is 3:04.
