The story behind
Save a Prayer, according to DoReSol
The melody of _Save a Prayer_ begins with a delicate synthesizer pattern, created on a Roland SH-2, which remains as an underlying echo throughout the song. This piece, released in August 1982 as the third single from their album _Rio_, became a high point for Duran Duran on the UK charts, reaching the second position. Although not initially released as a single in North America, its music video gained significant popularity on MTV. Finally, an edited version saw the light in the United States in January 1985, accompanied by a live version from the album _Arena_, achieving the sixteenth spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's composition began with Andy Taylor and Nick Rhodes exploring chords, and was then built upon a sequenced foundation. The lyrics, written by Simon Le Bon during a tour, describe a chance encounter that leads to a fleeting relationship, and he himself has described them as "realistic, not romantic." The chorus is said to have been inspired by Gordon Lightfoot's folk song "If You Could Read My Mind." Musically, the verses unfold in D minor, while the chorus transitions to B minor, creating an evocative contrast.
The recording of _Save a Prayer_ took place between January and February 1982 at AIR Studios in London. The album _Rio_, from which it is part, was released in May 1982. This second work by Duran Duran explored more experimental sonorities, incorporating instruments such as the vibraphone and marimba, and even everyday sounds like the lighting of a cigarette or the crunching of ice cubes. Producer Colin Thurston was in charge of this production. The music video, directed by Russell Mulcahy, was filmed in April 1982 in Sri Lanka, capturing scenes in jungles, beaches, and temples, including the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya and the ruins of a Buddhist temple in Polonnaruwa. During the shoot, the band experienced unexpected moments, such as when the mating call of an elephant caused a comical and somewhat tense reaction. The band, formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, evolved into its definitive lineup with Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Nick Rhodes.
