The story behind
New Religion, according to DoReSol
The song New Religion, released as a single in May 1982, is presented in the liner notes of the album Rio as an internal dialogue, a conversation between the "Ego" and the "Alter-ego". This duality is audibly manifested in the final verses, where two voices overlap, creating a sense of conflict or debate. The track's duration is 5 minutes and 33 seconds, and its production was handled by Colin Thurston, who also oversaw the recording engineering.
The album Rio, of which New Religion is a part, was recorded between January and March 1982 at AIR Studios in London. For this work, Duran Duran explored more experimental sounds than on their debut, incorporating instruments such as the vibraphone and marimba, and even capturing everyday sounds like the lighting of a cigarette or the crunching of ice cubes. The record, released on May 10, 1982, is characterized by its blend of new wave, synth-pop, pop rock, and dance-rock, with influences from disco and funk. The lyrics, written by Simon Le Bon, address themes such as the pursuit of dreams and the search for love.
