The story behind

Miles Davis recorded Sanctuary in a single day, on August 19, 1969, at Columbia Records' Studio B in New York City. It was no ordinary session: it was part of the takes that would eventually shape Bitches Brew, an album that broke away from what was known until then. The track, composed by Wayne Shorter, stretches for over ten minutes, enough time for the group to explore a soundscape where Davis's trumpet intertwines with Shorter's soprano saxophone and the electric keyboards of Joe Zawinul (on the left hand) and Chick Corea (on the right). The bass of Dave Holland, the guitar of John McLaughlin, and the percussion of Don Alias and Juma Santos complete an atmosphere that oscillates between the hypnotic and the explosive, never losing sight of that melody that repeats like a distant echo.What makes Sanctuary special is not just its length, but how its structure—based on repetitions with variations—allows each musician space to improvise without breaking the thread. The track was recorded live, with takes later edited by producer Teo Macero, who pieced together the final puzzle. They weren't aiming for a polished album: they wanted to capture the raw energy of a moment when jazz blended with rock, African rhythms, and electrified instruments. Bitches Brew ended up being a turning point, but Sanctuary is one of those tracks that, years later, still sounds fresh because it doesn't sound like a studio recording, but like a unique instant where the music was made without a net.
