The story behind
Rockability is a song that moves between rock and soul, with a groove that doesn’t let go from the first seconds. The bass and drums establish a repetitive pattern but with an unexpected twist: the rhythm changes meter in the chorus, as if the body had to adjust to a step that never quite straightens out. The guitar, for its part, carries the melody with a retro feel, almost as if it were recorded in the 1950s, but with a modern sparkle that only Hall & Oates could achieve at the time. The result is a piece that sounds like nostalgia, yet without falling into melancholy; rather, it has the energy of someone who enjoys the present without worrying about fitting into a mold.
The song appeared on Ooh Yeah!, the duo’s thirteenth studio album, released in May 1988. It was their first work with Arista Records and marked a comeback after four years without new material. Although the album reached platinum status in the United States and had hits like Everything Your Heart Desires (which reached number 3), Rockability remained somewhat in the background compared to the more heavily promoted singles. Yet this doesn’t diminish its strength: Cash Box praised its sophisticated arrangement, where funk blends with a punchy guitar riff, creating a contrast few songs of the era dared to explore. It is also the last collaboration between Hall & Oates and Janna Allen as a co-writer, before her passing in 1993.
