The story behind

The song Purple Stain, which is part of the 1999 album Californication, delves into quite direct lyrical territory, exploring the idea of a relationship marked by a girl's menstruation. The title itself, Purple Stain, functions as a double entendre. On one hand, it refers to the possibility of a girl's hair dye staining pillows, and on the other, it more crudely alludes to menstrual flow that can leave its mark. This duality in the lyrics, presented with Anthony Kiedis's particular way of expressing himself, gives the song a layer of meaning that goes beyond the superficial.

This track was recorded at a key moment for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album Californication marked the return of guitarist John Frusciante, who had been out of the band. His return brought a notable change in the group's sound, moving away from the direction they had taken on One Hot Minute (1995). The production of Californication was handled by Rick Rubin and it was released by Warner Bros. Records. In addition to Purple Stain, this album contains other well-known tracks such as Around the World, Otherside, Californication, and Scar Tissue. The music for Purple Stain was composed by Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, Flea, and John Frusciante, and it has a duration of 4:13.
