The story behind

Prófugos, according to DoReSol

The first time Prófugos was played live was at the Coliseo Amauta in Lima, Peru, in 1986. It wasn’t a rehearsal or a mere preview: it was the debut of a song that, unbeknownst to anyone at the time, would become one of the most recognizable anthems of Spanish-language rock. The opening riff — the one that kicks off with distorted guitar and a drumbeat that sets the pulse without hesitation — needs no introduction. It’s direct, forceful, and from the first measure, it’s clear it’s not here to play games: it’s here to stay. What’s curious is that, although the song was recorded on the album Signos that same year, the single didn’t release until 1987. In the meantime, the band took it to stages in Chile and Peru, as if the audience needed to get used to its energy before the record hit the shelves.

On Signos, the third album by Soda Stereo, Prófugos isn’t just another track: it’s the engine that propels the record. Recorded in 1986 with equipment that now seems rudimentary, the song sounds like raw rock but with a precision that defies its era. The tour that followed — the Gira Signos (1986–1988) — featured it in nearly every show, except for a couple of key stops: during the Gira Animal (1991–1992), it only appeared in the second half, and in the 1996 mini-tour for Comfort y música para volar, it was surprisingly left out. It wasn’t until 2006, with Gustavo Cerati in his solo phase, that he revived it for the Tour Ahí Vamos, giving it a rock-and-roll twist that caught more than a few off guard. But where it truly shone was on the Gira Me Verás Volver of 2007, when Soda Stereo returned to the stage: there, in the final show, they played it alongside Fabián Quintiero on keyboards, and the crowd received it as if it had always been there. There’s even a 2007 live version from Ecuador with Daniel Sais that never made it into official records but circulates on YouTube as a treasure for fans.
