The story behind
Pop Life (extended version), according to DoReSol
The extended version of Pop Life, with its nine-minute duration, immerses us in a sonic exploration that moves away from more commercial formulas. Instead of seeking the repetition of previous hits, Prince ventures into more elaborate textures and styles that evoke the psychedelic. This piece, released in 1985, is part of Around the World in a Day, an album where the band The Revolution also receives credit, marking a stage of experimentation after the phenomenon of Purple Rain. The record label, attending to the artist's desire for the project to be valued as a whole, opted for limited distribution, delaying the release of singles to allow the album to be appreciated in its entirety.
Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minneapolis in 1958 and passed away in Chanhassen in 2016, was a key figure in 1980s music, recognized for his innovation and for being the creator of the so-called "Minneapolis sound." This style, which began to take shape in works like Dirty Mind and was consolidated in 1981's Controversy, also notably influenced the debut album of The Time. His peak popularity arrived with Purple Rain in 1984, a success that earned him an Oscar for best original score and a Grammy, in addition to propelling songs like When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy to worldwide fame. Throughout his career, Prince sold millions of records, establishing himself as an influential and multifaceted artist.
