The story behind
The song Piel canela, lasting two minutes and nine seconds, is part of the album More Cole Español, recorded by Nat King Cole in 1962. This record was registered in Mexico City and represents the artist's third and final foray into Spanish-themed music, following his previous works Cole Español from 1958 and A Mis Amigos from 1959. Listening to Piel canela and the rest of the recordings from this period, one perceives a performance where Cole, although he continued to perfect his Spanish pronunciation, conveyed a remarkable enjoyment while singing. It is a distinctive feature of these sessions, where the warmth of his voice intertwines with the musical atmosphere he sought to explore.
The career of Nat King Cole, whose full name was Nathaniel Adams Coles, began in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1919, and ended in Santa Monica, California, in 1965. From a very young age, his mother, Perlina Adams, was his only piano teacher, instilling in him a training that encompassed jazz, gospel, and classical music. The family moved to Chicago when Nat was a child, settling in the Bronzeville neighborhood. This place was known for its vibrant nightlife and jazz clubs in the late 1920s, an environment that allowed Nat to listen closely to figures like Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. It was precisely the inspiration from Hines that prompted him to start his artistic career in the mid-1930s, still as a teenager. At that time, he adopted the name of Nat Cole, omitting the "s" from his family surname. His older brother, Eddie, who was a bassist, joined his band for the first recording in 1936. The group managed to consolidate itself in the local Chicago scene, performing frequently in clubs, and it was on one of these stages where Nat received the nickname "King". Later, after a tour as a pianist with Eubie Blake that took him to Long Beach, California, Nat King Cole decided to settle there, laying the groundwork for his future career.
