The story behind

Passato, presente, according to DoReSol

The song *Passato, presente* by Lucio Dalla, with its duration of 4 minutes and 32 seconds, emerges from a crucial moment in the singer-songwriter's career. Released in April 1973 as part of the album *Il giorno aveva cinque teste*, it marks the beginning of a fundamental creative phase. This album, along with its successors *Anidride solforosa* and *Automobili*, is considered a turning point for both Dalla and Italian music in general.

This period saw Lucio Dalla shift his lyrical approach. He moved away from his collaboration with Sergio Bardotti and Gianfranco Baldazzi, who had been his co-writers on most of his previous works. Instead, he turned to the poet Roberto Roversi, a partnership that would last for four years and shape three albums. Dalla's music, with its jazz roots, explored various facets throughout his extensive career, from beat to rhythmic experimentation and singer-songwriter styles, always pushing the boundaries of Italian melody. His beginnings were as a clarinetist in a jazz group in Rome, sharing the stage with figures like the future music critic Fabrizio Zampa and the comedian Massimo Catalano, under the patronage of Carlo Loffredo. Later, his vocal style, influenced by the power of James Brown and scat improvisation, was characterized by a unique, sometimes dissonant and bold expressiveness that challenged the musical conventions of the time. It was Gino Paoli who encouraged him to embark on his solo career.
