The story behind
Orange Blossom Special, according to DoReSol
The melody of *Orange Blossom Special* evokes the speed and rattle of a luxury passenger train. The original composer, Ervin T. Rouse, created it in 1938, long before the actual train arrived in Jacksonville. Although Rouse registered it, other musicians like Robert Russell "Chubby" Wise also claimed authorship, even though Wise never wrote it down. Rouse, a private man who lived in the Everglades, did not get into disputes. Later, Johnny Cash learned of his story and invited him to play it at a concert. Gene Christian, a fiddler who knew both men, has confirmed that Rouse is the original author. Chubby Wise, for his part, helped popularize the song by performing it weekly at the Grand Ole Opry.
The recording of Johnny Cash's *Orange Blossom Special* was made in 1964 and released as a single in 1965, forming part of his self-titled album. The song, with its fast tempo and embellishments imitating train wheels and whistles, became a recurring theme at bluegrass festivals from the 1950s onwards, highlighting the fiddler's skill. Bill Monroe, considered the father of bluegrass, also recorded the piece, consolidating its success. Cash's version, produced by Frank Jones and Don Law, captures that vibrant energy that makes it so special for those who perform it.
