The story behind

Open Your Heart, according to DoReSol

The song kicks off with a bassline that hits like a repeated heartbeat, dragging the listener into a rhythm that demands attention. It's not just a dance track: it's a first-person statement, where Madonna's voice sounds resolute, almost defiant, as she asks to be let into a heart she promises not to break. The hook isn't in a conventional chorus, but in that blend of urgency and tenderness running through every verse, as if the lyrics were an intimate conversation turned universal. The bridge, with its melody that unravels and reassembles, is where the song becomes addictive: there's no room for doubt, only the insistence that love isn't forced, but neither is it rejected without a try.

Originally, the track was called Follow Your Heart and was pitched as a rock proposal for Cyndi Lauper, but ended up in Madonna's hands thanks to a demo that composer Gardner Cole recorded with his then-partner, Donna De Lory. She heard it, transformed it into something more danceable with the help of Patrick Leonard, and changed its name. The recording took place at Channel Recording (Los Angeles) in 1986, during the True Blue sessions, an album where Madonna aimed to sound more mature without losing her energy. The single was released in January 1987 in the United States and in December in Europe, quickly climbing to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, the artist's fifth number-one hit on that chart. It also charted in countries like Canada, Belgium, and Ireland, cementing its status as an anthem that transcended genres. The video, directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, took provocation to another level: Madonna as a dancer in a strip club, with a child as an accidental onlooker—an image that drew both praise for its boldness and criticism for its rawness.
