The story behind
The first time I heard Oh My Love, I paused in the silence that surrounds it. It's not a song that shouts for attention; instead, it envelops you with a calm that feels like it comes from somewhere else. The piano and guitar move as if floating, without haste, as if each note is there to remind you of something you already knew but had never heard so clearly. John Lennon's voice sounds closer than in other tracks, as if he were singing only for whoever is listening at that moment. There are no adornments, no grand choruses: just a melody that repeats with a softness rarely achieved in rock.
They recorded it in May 1971 at Ascot Sound Studios, just as they were finishing the sessions for the Imagine album. It was the last song to be recorded for that record, as if it were a natural closing after months of work. George Harrison lent his guitar for this track, and his playing style recalls what he did in Julia or Happiness Is a Warm Gun, with that melodic touch that always defined him. The lyrics, written alongside Yoko Ono, don't speak of love in the traditional romantic sense, but of something deeper, as if each word were a whispered secret of complicity. The song appeared on the Imagine album, released on September 9, 1971, and has since been included in compilations like Wonsaponatime (1998) and The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006).
