The story behind
When Nirvana appeared for the MTV Unplugged in 1993, they broke a bit with the show's tradition. While the basis was an acoustic performance, they allowed themselves to use some electric amplification and effects. What's interesting is that, instead of focusing on their hits, they chose to perform mostly lesser-known material and covers by other artists. Among the songs they tackled were tracks by The Vaselines, David Bowie, Lead Belly, and the Meat Puppets. For this performance, guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Gold joined the group. The recording took place at Sony Music Studios in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, on November 18, 1993, and was directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller.
The version of Oh Me we hear with Nirvana is a cover of an original song by the Meat Puppets, written by Curt Kirkwood and first released on their 1984 album, Meat Puppets II. It was precisely this collaboration during the famous MTV Unplugged that gave it great popularity. The album compiling this performance, titled MTV Unplugged in New York, was released by DGC Records on November 1, 1994, almost seven months after the passing of Kurt Cobain. The television broadcast of the performance occurred on December 16, 1993.
