The story behind
The song Night Prowler by AC/DC, released in 1979, has a peculiar history that goes beyond its hard rock sound. Originally, the lyrics, written by Bon Scott, Angus Young, and Malcolm Young, focused on the idea of a young man sneaking into his girlfriend's room, hidden from her parents. However, over time, the song acquired a very different and somber connotation.
Years after its release, it became known that a criminal, Ricardo Leyva Muñoz Ramírez, who called himself "Night Stalker," was a fan of AC/DC. According to police reports, this individual wore a band t-shirt during his crimes and, on one occasion, left a band hat at a crime scene. It was alleged that Night Prowler was his favorite song, which disturbingly linked the song to his actions. The band addressed this association years later on the VH1 program, *Behind the Music*, clarifying the original intention of the lyrics and how the song, unintentionally, became involved in a dark narrative.
Night Prowler was part of the album Highway to Hell, released on July 27, 1979, by Albert Productions and Atlantic Records. This record was the Australian band's sixth studio work and marked a milestone, being the last album with Bon Scott as lead vocalist, who sadly passed away on February 19, 1980. The recording of Highway to Hell featured production by Robert John “Mutt” Lange, and sound engineering was handled by Kevin Dallimore, with mixing done by Tony Platt. By 1978, AC/DC had already released five albums internationally and undertaken extensive tours across Australia and Europe. Their arrival in the United States in 1977, despite limited radio promotion, allowed them to build a live fanbase. Previous albums like Let There Be Rock (1977) and Powerage (1978) had already consolidated their hard rock sound with blues influences.
