The story behind

My Man on Willpower, according to DoReSol

If there's a song that achieves what few do: sounding at once like a dance anthem and an intimate joke, that's My Man on Willpower. It begins with a burst of synthesizers reminiscent of the darker side of Depeche Mode, but instead of sinking into melancholy, the track accelerates with marked handclaps and an unexpected twist: a pedal steel guitar peeking through the beats like a country nod in the middle of an Eurodisco. The lyrics, delivered with a tone that’s both sarcastic and frustrated, speak of someone so obsessed with personal growth that they forgot why they started a relationship in the first place. It’s not a critique, but an observation with a hook: the tension between the comedic and the real is in every syllable, as if the song breathes to the rhythm of those "uncomfortable spaces" mentioned by Jon Caramanica in The New York Times.

They recorded it in Jack Antonoff’s studio, where the sound was built from layers blending the organic —like that pedal steel— with the synthetic, in a balance that recalls ABBA but with the boldness of an artist unafraid to laugh at her own lyrics. The track leaked in July 2025, when a user on X announced the third track of the album Man's Best Friend with a heart emoji and a "mecachis", and Sabrina didn’t take long to confirm it with a simple "Track #3 omg". But the moment it truly came alive was live: first in November 2025, during a surprise show at the Scotiabank Arena, and later in April 2026, when she performed it on a treadmill at the Coachella stage. Exact duration: 3:17, though on the album produced by Antonoff and John Ryan it sounds one second longer. It’s no coincidence that Jason Lipshutz of Billboard placed it among the best tracks on the album: here, irony doesn’t drown out emotion; it makes it more human.
