The story behind
My Best Girl, according to DoReSol
The song My Best Girl, lasting 4:11, is a track where the essence of UB40 is manifested through the joint production of Dan Armstrong, Danny Canaan, and the band itself. The group, originally from Birmingham, England, was formed in 1978 and is characterized by its sound that blends pop with influences of reggae and dub.
The members of UB40, friends since childhood, acquired their first instruments with unconventional funds, even before fully mastering their use. This spirit of learning and experimentation is reflected in their career. After a demo that caught the attention of a radio station, they began performing in venues. It was Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders who gave them a significant boost by inviting them to be the opening act on her 1979 tour. The following year, in 1980, they released their debut album Signing off and founded their record label, DEP International, with which they published Present Arms in Dub. The big breakthrough came in 1983 with their rendition of Red Red Wine, originally by Neil Diamond, included in the cover album Labour of Love. By 2010, the band continued performing at international concerts, despite the departure of their vocalist Ali Campbell in 2008, who later formed his own project, "The Dep Band".
