The story behind

Mutt, according to DoReSol

The song Mutt by blink‐182 has a duration of 3:23 and stems from the band's connection to the Southern California surf scene. The main inspiration for this track was Benji Weatherly, a professional surfer with whom Tom lived and who, it is said, had a very active sex life. In fact, before the song appeared on the album Enema of the State, when they played it live, they referred to it as The Surf Song.

Tom himself described Mutt as a piece about his friend Benji Weatherly, whom everyone nicknamed "Mutt". The lyrics focus on the relationship of a couple who enjoy intimacy and don't worry too much about other things, simply seeking to enjoy the moment. The song had a notable moment in the 1999 comedy film American Pie, appearing in a scene where the main character, Jim, uses a webcam. Curiously, the members of blink‐182 made some brief appearances in that same scene. Darrell Harvey, John Nelson, and Robert Read participated as engineers in the recording of Mutt, while the mixing was handled by Tom Lord‐Alge and the production was carried out by Jerry Finn.
