The story behind
Mr. Brownstone, according to DoReSol
The story behind Guns N’ Roses' Mr. Brownstone takes us to a very particular moment in the band's life. It was written by Izzy Stradlin and Slash in Stradlin's apartment, while they were dealing with their heroin addiction, for which "Brownstone" is a street term. The lyrics emerged from that experience, reflecting how the need to consume increased over time, an idea they jotted down on the back of a grocery bag before taking it to Axl Rose. According to Slash, these words described a common journey in their lives at that time. Interestingly, this was the first piece of music they created after signing with Geffen Records.
The recording of Mr. Brownstone took place in 1987, as part of the band's debut album, Appetite for Destruction. This album, released in July of the same year, was produced by Mike Clink, who also handled the recording engineering. The mixing was done by Michael Barbiero and Steve Thompson. The album, which includes songs inspired by the daily lives and youth of the members, was recorded between January and June 1987. In the United Kingdom, Mr. Brownstone was released as the lead single along with It's So Easy, while in the United States it accompanied Welcome to the Jungle on its B-side.
