The story behind

Money Honey, according to DoReSol

The story behind Money Honey, in the voice of Elvis Presley, takes us to a scenario where desperation for rent money clashes with a peculiar love proposal. The lyrics introduce a man who, penniless, faces his landlord. His only hope rests on the woman he loves most, to whom he asks for financial help to be able to stay. Her response is a resounding rejection, interpreting his plea as a lack of genuine love and ending the relationship. The song becomes a tense dialogue where she, faced with his insistence, seems to mock his situation, suggesting that another man, with money, already occupies his place. In the end, the protagonist, although he claims to have learned his lesson, remains trapped by his need for money.

It is said that Buddy Holly was the one who presented this song to Elvis in 1955, while they were both sharing stages in Texas. There was a previous attempt to record Money Honey at Sun Records in Memphis, but that version never reached the public and the tapes were lost. It was on January 10, 1956, now under the RCA label, when Elvis recorded the version we know today in Nashville, Tennessee. From takes 5 and 6 emerged the master that RCA released as a single, with One Side Love Affair on the B-side. This single reached #76 on the Billboard Hot 100. Later, Money Honey was included in Elvis Presley's debut album, released in 1956, a record that marked a milestone by being the first rock and roll album to top the Billboard Top Pop Albums. That same energy could be seen live, when Elvis performed it on Ed Sullivan's show, where his electric guitar, handled by Scotty Moore, took center stage when Elvis moved away from the microphone.
