The song Model by Simply Red, with a duration of 3:47, is from the album Stars, released on September 30, 1991. This record became a phenomenon, especially in the United Kingdom, where it achieved twelve-times platinum status and was the best-selling album of the year in both 1991 and 1992. This had not happened since Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel achieved the same in 1970 and 1971. By April 2019, Stars ranked as the fourteenth best-selling album of all time in the UK. The album was also nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1992 and, in the year 2000, Q magazine included it in its list of "The 100 Greatest British Albums Ever" at number 80.

The production of Stars was handled by Mick Hucknall and Stewart Levine. Recording engineering and mixing were done by Daren Klein, while mastering was performed by Bernie Grundman. Simply Red, led by vocalist Mick Hucknall, was formed in 1984. Before Stars, the group had already achieved success with albums such as Picture Book (1985), which included the tracks "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" and "Holding Back the Years", and A New Flame (1989), which contained their popular cover of "If You Don't Know Me By Now".
