The story behind
Mi piaci, mi piaci…, according to DoReSol
In 1970 Ornella recorded Mi piaci, mi piaci…, a song that sounds like an intimate confession between stifled laughter and a rhythm that isn’t quite cheerful but isn’t melancholic either. The track is built on a game of repetitions —the title itself is a chorus— that ends up enveloping the listener in a kind of musical joke where what seems simple hides a detail that repeats just when you least expect it. It’s neither a waltz nor rock, but something that floats between the classical and the popular, with an air of those melodies you hum without realizing it.
The album Appuntamento, where it was included, reached high sales positions at the time and gathered songs Ornella had already performed on important stages: from Casa Bianca, which in 1968 came second in Sanremo, to Eternità, which in 1970 she presented alongside I Camaleonti at the same festival. However, Mi piaci, mi piaci… was not part of those competitions; it slipped into the record as a track already circulating among her fans, recorded with that mix of freshness and boldness that characterized Ornella at the time. It lasted just over two and a half minutes, precisely the right length for the wordplay and melody to stick without wearing out the listener.
