The story behind

Meditação, according to DoReSol

This version of Meditação is one of those pieces where time seems to stand still. At just one minute and forty-six seconds long, the track is built on a guitar foundation that seems to float, as if the instrument were breathing in the same rhythm as the voice of João Gilberto. What is most surprising is how simplicity becomes genius: every note sounds like a whisper, yet with such precision that it ends up being hypnotic. There are no unnecessary adornments, only the essence of bossa nova in its purest form, where every chord and every pause seem calculated to convey a calm that few songs achieve.

The album O amor, o sorriso e a flor —released in Brazil in 1961— was the first to introduce to the world, beyond its borders, the sound that Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim were crafting. Initially, the album was released in the United States in 1960 under the title Brazil’s Brilliant João Gilberto, edited by Capitol, and served as a bridge between Brazil and American jazz. Jobim had already left his mark on jazz with songs like Samba de Uma Nota Só or Corcovado, but it was in this album where Gilberto solidified his vocal and guitar technique, a style that would later define bossa nova. The recording, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira, did not seek grand arrangements or orchestrations: the goal was to capture the essence of what both composers envisioned, and in that process, the album ended up being included in the list of the 500 most important Brazilian music albums according to a 2022 vote by the Discoteca Básica podcast.
