The story behind
Master of Puppets, according to DoReSol
As we delve into *Master of Puppets*, we encounter a piece that goes beyond a simple song. Its structure unfolds over nearly nine minutes, marked by complex instrumental sections that invite the dissection of each passage. There's a particular moment, between minutes 3:30 and 5:14, where the tempo softens, a technique the band would employ again in other compositions. The lyrics, meanwhile, address the theme of control, but from the perspective of drugs, which, instead of being controlled by the user, end up dominating the addicted person.
This composition, released in 1986, has become a staple of their live performances, having been played over 1500 times. It was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Sweet Silence Studios, under the production of Flemming Rasmussen. This album marked the final involvement of bassist Cliff Burton, who sadly passed away in September 1986 following a bus accident while the band was on tour. The album cover, created by Metallica and Peter Mensch, with painting by Don Brautigam, features a field of white gravestones connected by strings, manipulated by hands in a reddish, cloudy sky, with an orange glow on the horizon.
