The story behind

Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?), according to DoReSol

When you immerse yourself in *Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)*, you encounter a melody that seems to float, laden with deep melancholy. The piece, written by Jimmy Davis, Roger Ramirez and James Sherman in 1941, became a hallmark of Billie Holiday’s voice. She first recorded it in 1944, specifically on October 4 and November 8, for the Decca label. What’s interesting is that, although the song is strongly associated with jazz, it is also considered part of the pop genre. Holiday’s version, released in 1945, reached number 5 on the R&B charts and number 16 on the pop charts. Later, in 1946, Charlie Parker recorded his own interpretation, a moment marked by his intoxicated state during the session, where the producer from Dial Records, Ross Russell, had to physically assist him so he could sing. Years later, in 1967, Barbra Streisand included it on her album *Simply Streisand*, reaching position 29 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

The story behind *Lover Man* is as rich as its sound. The song was conceived with Billie Holiday in mind, and her performance is what catapulted her to fame. Her version was also recognized with an induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1989, a testament to its enduring impact. Although many jazz musicians prefer to perform it in F major, the original version by Sonny Stitt was played in D-flat, showcasing the composition’s flexibility. The standard duration of the piece is 3 minutes and 17 seconds. The song was intended to be the main track on one side of the single, with *That Ole Devil Called Love* as its B-side.
