The story behind
Lies, according to DoReSol
The song Lies by Alphaville, lasting 3 minutes and 33 seconds, immerses itself in a reflective sound atmosphere despite not being one of the album's main singles. Its structure and melody, though not as direct as other tracks by the band, possess a hypnotic quality built through layers of synthesizers and a distinctive vocal line. The production of Lies, like the rest of the material on the album Forever Young, was a collaborative effort between Alphaville, Wolfgang Loos, and Andreas Budde, with Colin Pearson also contributing to the production. The final mix was handled by Wolfgang Loos.
The context in which Lies was born dates back to the early days of Alphaville. In 1982, Marian Gold and Bernhard Lloyd were already exploring musical projects, such as Nelson Community, which led to Chinchilla Green. Later that year, Lloyd teamed up with Frank Mertens, and together they invited Gold to join, forming the band initially called Forever Young before adopting the name Alphaville. The release of Big in Japan in 1983 marked a turning point, becoming a global hit and paving the way for the album Forever Young, which also included Sounds Like a Melody and the title track. Despite this initial success, Frank Mertens left the band and was replaced by Ricky Echolette. The album Forever Young was released on September 27, 1984, by Warner Music Group and reached the top 20 in six European countries, topping the charts in Norway and Sweden. A special edition of this album was released in March 2019.
