The story behind
Alphaville recorded "Forever Young" in 1984 as the third single from their album of the same name. The song started out as a dance track, but producer Andreas Budde turned it into something simpler, almost introspective. The band spent two days trying to make the dance version, but they weren't satisfied. Budde told them that the final version was the one that had to be released. The lyrics, written by Marian Gold, originally included a verse that evoked a sense of almost fascist adoration, but record executives replaced it with a different line that Gold considers the worst part of the song. The song was recorded at Studio 54, produced by Budde, Colin Pearson, and Wolfgang Loos. The video shows Alphaville performing in a hospital, with people of all ages watching.
