The story behind
Judy Is a Punk, according to DoReSol
The raw energy of Judy Is a Punk condenses into just one minute and thirty-two seconds, a sonic whirlwind that kicks off with a furiously strummed chord. This track, part of Ramones' debut album, is said to have been inspired by two enthusiastic band followers, Jackie and Judy. One of them, in an interview for the documentary End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones, described it as "prophetic," suggesting a connection to the tragic fate of both, who supposedly died in a plane crash, a somber echo that resonates in the line "Perhaps they'll die, oh yeah."
The first album by Ramones, released on April 23, 1976, by Sire Records, was a milestone recorded in just seven days and on a budget of $6,400, a figure that in 2025 would equate to $36,200. The recording process involved the collaboration of engineers Rob Freeman and Don Hünerberg, under the production of Thomas Erdelyi and Craig Leon. The iconic cover image, captured by Roberta Bayley of Punk magazine, shows the four members leaning against a brick wall in New York City. The band, formed in 1974 in Forest Hills, Queens, United States, became a pioneering force in punk rock, defining the genre with their direct and minimalist approach, in contrast to the musical complexity of the era.
