The story behind
I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, according to DoReSol
With that particular energy that characterizes the Ramones, we find I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend. What's interesting about this piece is that, while it falls within punk rock, it has a more melodic air, almost like a nod to their 1950s rock and roll influences. In fact, it's said that the glockenspiel sound on the studio version is somewhat uncommon for them. The song, written by drummer Tommy Ramone, is perceived as a rather direct declaration of affection, one of those compositions that linger in time for their simplicity and unexpected warmth within the punk universe.
The story of I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend is linked to the band's first album, titled eponymously, Ramones. This album was recorded in early 1976, in just seven days and with a budget of about six thousand dollars. The song was released as a single in September of that same year, following Blitzkrieg Bop. Before these official versions, demos of the melody already existed, indicating that the idea had been gestating since 1975. The producer of this work was Craig Leon, who also played an important role in the label Sire Records betting on the band. Curiously, as told in the autobiography of Dee Dee Ramone, there was interest from other bands, such as the Bay City Rollers, in recording this song, suggesting its potential to have been a great commercial success.
