The story behind
When the Bee Gees recorded Jive Talkin’, they already had a career that had taken them through different stages. Born on the Isle of Man and with their early years in Manchester, Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb moved to Australia in the late 50s, where they began their musical journey. After an initial success in their home country with Spicks and Specks, they returned to the United Kingdom in 1967, under the guidance of producer Robert Stigwood, who boosted their international projection. The trio was characterized by their easily recognizable three-part vocal harmonies. Robin's distinctive vibrato marked their early hits, while Barry's falsetto became their signature sound in the late 70s and 80s. The brothers not only wrote their own hits but also created and produced songs for other artists.
The production of Jive Talkin’ was handled by Arif Mardin. The song, with a duration of 3:44, is part of a repertoire spanning decades, from the 60s to the 90s. A record of their live performance was captured on the album and audiovisual format One Night Only, recorded at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on November 14, 1997. While the CD version of this concert had some omitted songs, the DVD material is complete. In 1999, a reissue of the album was released, including an additional CD with the missing tracks. The cover image of this edition, both on CD and DVD, shows them recreating the iconic pose from Saturday Night Fever. Later, in 2013, Eagle Rock Entertainment reissued the concert in Blu-ray format, offering superior audio quality to the DVD, although the visual enhancement was more limited, upscaling the standard definition video to 1080i.
