The story behind

Israel, according to DoReSol

The song Israel, with music by Barry Gibb and Johnny Carisi, is presented as a piece that evokes a deep emotional connection, described by some critics as a love letter to the nation. Barry Gibb himself shared that he composed it as a tribute, a dedication to the country, and that the lyrics emerged spontaneously, singing whatever came to mind once he had the melody. This method of creation, where the lyrics were ad-libbed without prior writing, gives it a very personal and direct quality. The vocal performance, as described, combines singing with spoken parts, backed by a strong piano accompaniment and a prominent presence of violins, all in a style reminiscent of old-school rhythm and blues. Despite its arrangement, the song is considered to transcend it and present itself as a solid melody.

This ballad was recorded on April 7, 1971, at the IBC Studios in London, as part of the sessions for the album Trafalgar. On the same day, other compositions by the Gibb brothers were also recorded, including Trafalgar and It's Just the Way by Maurice Gibb, Engines, Aeroplanes by Robin Gibb, and the ballad Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself, also by Barry Gibb. Israel was released as a single in May 1972 in Belgium and the Netherlands, where it reached number 22 on the charts. The B-side of this release was the song Dearest. The album Trafalgar, released in September 1971 in the United States and November in the United Kingdom, was the ninth studio album by the Bee Gees and is included in the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
