The story behind
This song, Islands in the Stream, has a rather peculiar origin story. It was conceived by brothers Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, and Robin Gibb, the Bee Gees, originally thinking of a style closer to rhythm and blues for Diana Ross. However, the idea mutated and was adapted for a country duo, giving rise to the version we know performed by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. The melody and structure, although born from the pen of the Bee Gees, were molded to fit perfectly into the voices of this iconic country duo. The recording took place in 1983, and the song became the first single from Rogers' album titled Eyes That See in the Dark. What's interesting about its composition is how the tonalities are played with: it begins in C major when Rogers leads, and changes to A-flat major when Parton takes the lead, a detail that gives a special dynamism to the performance.
The impact of Islands in the Stream was immediate and powerful. It managed to reach the top of the most important charts in the United States, such as the Billboard Hot 100, marking the second pop number one for both artists. Furthermore, it positioned itself at the top of the Country and Adult Contemporary music rankings. The song was so successful that the Recording Industry Association of America awarded it platinum and gold certifications for its sales. Even, in a 2005 survey conducted by CMT, it was recognized as one of the best country duets of all time. The Bee Gees, for their part, also released their own live version of the song in 1998, which was later included in their album One Night Only, recorded in Las Vegas in 1997, and subsequently a studio version in 2001.
