The story behind
The story behind *In the Mood* and the sound of Alphaville is intertwined with the birth of their best-known project. Before the name Alphaville resonated, Marian Gold and Bernhard Lloyd were already exploring music together. In 1982, they were part of Nelson Community and later a band called Chinchilla Green, which never took off. That same year, Lloyd joined another keyboardist, Frank Mertens, and together they invited Gold to join as vocalist. Thus was born the band that, after a name change, would become known as Alphaville.
The band's first big step came in 1983 with the release of their single *Big in Japan*. Its global success, along with *Sounds Like a Melody*, served as a preview of what would be their debut album, Forever Young. This record, released on September 27, 1984, by Warner Music Group, also included the title track. Despite the good moment, Frank Mertens left the band, being replaced by Ricky Echolette, who had already crossed paths with them in Chinchilla Green. The album was well-received in Europe, reaching the top 20 in six countries and the first place in Norway and Sweden. The band continued their path, releasing Afternoons in Utopia in 1986. In 2019, a special edition of Forever Young was released.
