The story behind
In a Turkish Town, according to DoReSol
This short and catchy song is one of those that sticks in your head without warning. At just over two minutes in length, In a Turkish Town sounds like a quick but intense trip, where the rhythm picks up from the first measure without ever losing the groove. The track isn’t a massive hit like others by the same artist, but it has that distinctive mark that makes it worth learning: a clean, direct sound with an air that recalls the early years of rock, when recordings still carried that freshness of a live rehearsal.
It was recorded at Gold Star Studios, in Los Angeles, during the sessions that would go on to form their only studio album. It was February 1959, just before fate tragically cut short their career. The album, released by Del-Fi Records, reached as high as number 23 on the Billboard album chart, but In a Turkish Town remained a minor gem within a work that, at the time, already showcased the potential of an artist who promised much more. Later reissues changed the cover designs, but the original sound remains intact: a little piece of history that, though it didn’t shine as brightly as other songs on the album, still serves as a great exercise in understanding what rock sounded like in its early years.
