The story behind
"Impossible Love" is one of those songs that shows how a band can take someone else's melody and make it their own. UB40 didn't just copy it: they took the original song and shaped it in their signature style—that reggae sound with pop influences that made them so recognizable. The 5:12 runtime gives them room to develop arrangements that would go unnoticed in shorter versions, but here the tempo stretches out without ever losing the groove.
The album *Labor of Love II*, released in November 1989, was their second album dedicated exclusively to covers, following the path they had paved six years earlier with *Labor of Love*. For UB40, these kinds of projects weren’t mere stylistic exercises: they were a way to showcase their sound to new audiences. The band, formed in Birmingham in 1978 by a group of working-class friends, had already spent a decade proving that they could take other people’s songs and turn them into hits. In 1983, their cover of “Red Red Wine” catapulted them to stardom, and on this second volume, they continued to explore that same territory with equally solid results.
