The story behind

"Tears From My Eyes" sounds like a reggae sigh that weaves its way through the acoustic guitar, but with that band vibe that comes from decades of performing on stage. It’s not an original UB40 song, but rather another one of those gems the group rescued from the international songbook and put their own spin on: a mix of laid-back dub and pop with touches of soul. What makes it special is how the rhythm balances the organic with the calculated, as if every note were breathing to the beat of an English pub where the smoke hasn’t yet cleared.

The album *Labour of Love II*, released in late November 1989, was UB40’s second album dedicated exclusively to covers. By then, the band had already proven they could take a classic like “Red Red Wine” and turn it into an anthem without losing its essence. “Tears From My Eyes” arrived without as much fanfare as its album mates—“Here I Am (Come and Take Me)” and “The Way You Do the Things You Do” stormed the U.S. charts—but it ended up being one of those songs that die-hard fans keep as a secret. In the United Kingdom, it didn’t even make it onto the charts, but on the pub and college party circuit, it found its way in as a song that begs to be sung at the top of your lungs with a beer in hand.
