The story behind
The raw energy of If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It), with its 4 minutes and 37 seconds duration, encapsulates a defining stage for AC/DC. This track, part of a live album of the same name that reached number 13 in the UK, was conceived at a time when the band had already toured Australia and Europe, and was beginning to make a name for itself in the United States, even without much radio support. The sound heard in this song, along with works like Let There Be Rock from 1977 and Powerage from 1978, showed how AC/DC was consolidating its hard rock, blues-based style. The recording featured engineering by Kevin Dallimore and mixing by Tony Platt, under the production of Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who also helmed Highway to Hell.
This period, prior to the release of Highway to Hell in July 1979, was particularly significant. Highway to Hell was the first album of a trilogy produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange and, unfortunately, the last with Bon Scott as lead vocalist. Bon Scott passed away in February 1980, being later replaced by Brian Johnson. The band, formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, had already experimented with different lineups and sounds, but it was with Bon Scott that they found a voice that resonated strongly, especially after his joining in 1976, coinciding with the release of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Despite arriving in the UK during the punk rock explosion, AC/DC achieved a great connection with the public, laying the groundwork for future successes.
