The story behind

When you dive into I Would Die 4 U, you encounter an energy that compels you to move. It's the kind of track that makes you want to play it again and again, discovering layers in its driving beat. The way this piece was constructed, as part of the album Purple Rain, gives it a special weight. It was released as the fourth single in the United States and reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Reviews from the time captured that feeling: it was described as a moment of "contained ecstasy," highlighting one of the artist's most passionate vocal performances, and was called "electrifying," with a "nervous excitement" that grabs you.

The recording of I Would Die 4 U took place at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles in late August and early September 1983, with some parts added later. The producer and songwriter was Prince himself. This track, along with Baby I'm a Star, which follows it on the album, were often played in sequence, creating a continuous flow. The extended version of I Would Die 4 U is particularly interesting, as it is a studio improvisation with The Revolution and musicians from Sheila E.'s band, such as Eddie M on saxophone and Miko Weaver on guitar, in addition to Sheila E. herself. Although a longer version of this jam session, nearly 31 minutes long, was never officially released, it has circulated on bootlegs. The single was released on November 28, 1984, and its B-side, Another Lonely Christmas, is a melancholic tale. Interestingly, the latter was recorded in February 1984, and although the artist was quite solitary at that stage of his life, he insisted it was a fictional story. In the UK, the 12-inch edition of this single also included the song Free, from 1999.
