The story behind

The song Take Me With U, released as the last single in the United States from the album Purple Rain, is a duet originally intended for Vanity. Before filming began for the movie of the same name, she decided not to participate, opting for a contract with Motown Records and starting to film The Last Dragon. An early version of the song with Vanity's vocals exists and circulates among collectors. Following her decision, the track was destined for the album Apollonia 6, but was ultimately included in the soundtrack of Purple Rain. This addition meant that Prince had to shorten the original version of Computer Blue, which was more extensive and whose final part can be heard in the film. The version that made it to the single was approximately one minute shorter than the original. Critics at the time, such as Cash Box, highlighted the "beautiful melodies and well-placed string sections" as proof of Prince's versatility.

Recorded on January 27, 1984, at Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, Take Me With U was released on January 25, 1985, with an edited version of Baby I'm a Star as the B-side. In the United States, it reached number 40 on the Hot Black Singles chart and number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the weeks of March 23 and 30, 1985. In the United Kingdom, it was released as a double A-side single with Let's Go Crazy, reaching number 7 in March 1985. The track, with a duration of 3:52 in its album version, is classified within psychedelic rock, psychedelic pop, and psychedelic soul. It was written and produced by Prince himself, who also handled the arrangements. The song, performed with Apollonia Kotero, is considered his first "official" duet and showcased a softer side of the artist.
