This record is one of the band's most successful works, having sold over 10 million copies in the United States, as did their self-titled debut album. The album 1984 reached number two on the Billboard 200, remaining there for five weeks. It was Van Halen's last album with David Lee Roth as lead vocalist, who left the band in 1985.
The recording of 1984 featured engineering by Ken Deane and Donn Landee, under the production of Ted Templeman. The band Van Halen, formed in 1974 by brothers Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen, along with David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony, established itself as a force in rock. Their first album, released in 1978, catapulted them to fame. Throughout their career, Van Halen has managed to place 13 singles at the top of the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and is one of the few rock bands with two albums certified as Diamond Album in the United States. The album 1984 was critically acclaimed, being included by Rolling Stone on its list of the "100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s".
