The story behind

I Know, according to DoReSol

I Know isn't a song that stands out for its rhythm or structure, but for what it conveys. It sounds like an intimate dialogue between Marley and whoever listens, where the lead voice blends with choruses that reinforce the idea of a conversation that has been going on for years. The original recording was a dubplate in 1979, but when it was included in Confrontation in 1983, they added the harmonies of the I Threes to give it that sense of unity the album sought. The result is a song that doesn’t shout, but sticks in your head for its simplicity and honesty.

What’s curious is how it came together. The rhythmic base was recorded in an unpretentious session, using demos Marley had left behind. When Bob Marley & The Wailers revisited the material years later, they decided to polish the details: Michael Reid took care of recording it meticulously, while Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Chris Blackwell, and Errol Brown split the mixing duties to achieve that warm yet direct sound. The production team, led by Errol Brown, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and Rita Marley, aimed for more than just a hit: they wanted it to sound as if time had not passed. And in part, they succeeded.
