The story behind

Jump Nyabinghi, according to DoReSol

In 1979, Bob Marley released an early version of Jump Nyabinghi as a dubplate, but the song we know today was born years later, when the vocal arrangements of the I Threes gave it an unexpected twist. What began as an instrumental track with rough lyrics sketches ended up becoming a piece where the rhythm of nyabinghi —a traditional Rastafarian drum pattern— intertwines with the energy of classic reggae. The song does not follow the mold of the commercial hits of the time; instead, it breathes the essence of home recording sessions, where voices overlap in organic layers, as if each phrase were a call and response between Marley and his backing vocalists. The result is a track that sounds like a ritual: less polished production, more dialogue between musicians and tradition.

Recorded among unpublished materials and singles that never saw the light of day during Marley’s lifetime, Jump Nyabinghi appeared on Confrontation, the last studio album released in May 1983, two years after his death. The track was assembled from original demos, but the definitive touch came with the harmonies of the I ThreesRita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths— who gave it that characteristic choral air missing in the 1979 version. Engineer Michael Reid captured the raw sound, while the mix was handled by Aston “Family Man” Barrett, Chris Blackwell, and Errol Brown, who sought to preserve the rawness of the original takes. At 3:44 in length, the song feels like a bridge between the spiritual and the earthly, where every guitar note by Junior Marvin or Al Anderson reinforces the sense that this was not just another record, but a necessary closure.
