The story behind

houdini, according to DoReSol

The song Houdini starts with an unforgettable hook: the sound of a key dropping, followed by a bassline that weaves into a nu-disco rhythm with hints of psychedelic pop. It’s not just the name that evokes the escapist magician, but the feeling that the track moves between hypnotic and unpredictable, as if every layer of production were a trick resolved just in time. Dua Lipa’s vocals play into that duality: smooth in the verses but edgy in the chorus, as though the song itself were slipping out of its own structure. The standout detail is the drum loop, which avoids a classic four-on-the-floor beat, instead swaying in a meter that stretches and contracts, creating a suspenseful tension only the most memorable tracks achieve.

The track began as a demo by Kevin Parker in 2022, even before Dua Lipa announced her third album. By the time she heard the snippet, she was already set on turning it into something bigger: she sat down with Caroline Ailin to write the lyrics, but it was Parker who polished it in January 2023, adding those sonic twists that make the song feel less like a straightforward dance track and more like an evolution of what Dua Lipa had explored in Future Nostalgia. The result was a single that, unintentionally, ended up defining the sound of Radical Optimism: less pure disco, more psychedelia with an electronic backbone. What’s curious is that, while the title and artwork play with the image of Harry Houdini, the song isn’t about literal escapes, but about the tension between what’s shown and what’s hidden—a theme Dua Lipa has always handled well in her music.

The official release came on November 9, 2023, but the journey to get there was longer than a magic trick. In October of that year, Dua Lipa wiped all her social media content, leaving only a photo of herself with red-dyed hair and the message *“miss me?”*, followed by an image of a key between her teeth and the phrase *“catch me or I go.”* The October 31 teaser, where a code in her posts spelled out the title, confirmed the album was on the way. By then, it was clear Houdini wouldn’t be just another track: in February 2024, she performed it live at the Grammy Awards, alongside other hits like Dance the Night, and months later, in January, released a live version titled London Sessions, where the song shined even brighter without losing its dancefloor essence. Along the way, the track not only hit number one in regions like Flanders and Wallonia, but also spent 17 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Songs chart—a feat few tracks achieve without repeating formulas.
